Today marks 7 years of non-nunnery… And I’m celebrating by swirling yet another glass of A to Z Pinot Noir! With Deb’s article “The B’ASS Story,” my mysterious past was revealed. But now I want to tell my side!
For those who are curious, yes, it’s true; I dedicated 12 years of my life to God and to the Church. And I’m glad I did… But I’m also glad I moved on. My vow of poverty would have kept many a rod and reel out of my hands (not to mention a boat). Obedience to the “fishers of men” was not so bad, but that vow of chastity would have caused me to miss my “reel calling.” It was actually on a date that I was re-introduced to fishing!
Due to a nice spinner bait, a 3 lb. bass and some yoda-esque instruction from my now best fishing buddy, Jonathan, I developed an addiction to fishing and one of my most treasured friendships. When we decided to call off our dating relationship, I must admit that I still begged him to take me “pity-fishing.” When he saw my remedial fly casting skills, he said I better find another friend – preferably a girl, who would have more patience – to teach me – if I wanted to continue fishing. I took his advice and promptly called up Deb and invited her to join me for an evening at my fav wine bar.
I had met Deb through a mutual friend at a church group. Have to admit that I thought it a little odd, yet kind of cool, when she said she wanted to start a fishing group at that church. That’s what made me spin to her number in my mental Rolodex a year later though. Lesson learned: Mention fishing in every conversation.
Since that night of wine and wild dancing to eighties music, we’ve shared plenty more wine and some pretty amazing fishing days. When Deb invited me to join forces with her in a new fishing brand for women (in an attempt to realize all the crazy ideas the wine had brought forth!) how could I refuse an opportunity to “profishionally” market my favorite sport and – if you define religion by what you do on Sunday mornings – my new religion.
As St. Peter often said when he wasn’t sure what the heck Jesus was talking about, “Let’s go fishing!” After all, he is my favorite saint.
